Ostrava Tennis Challenger 2010: Wednesday report

challenger tennis
All the criminals in Ostrava, don't worry about being arrested these days. The policemen instead of doing their rounds are standing behind the fence and watching tennis.

Pavel Snobel continues in his great comeback. He was first on the center court where he defeated Filip Krajinovic from Serbia 6/2, 7/5. Krajinovic looked really distracted and he was making unforced errors while Snobel was focused on his game and he was only returning the balls, waiting for Krajinovic's errors. The other difference was that Krajinovic shouted a lot of things at himself and his coach while Snobel remained completely silent even after making an unforced error. So he is through to the next round, to the delight of the fans and his cousin who works here as a ballgirl. In his own words, "So far it goes well, we'll see..."

Lukas Rosol made quick work of David Marrero. Marrero had no chance to get into the game as Rosol served perfectly, and also Marrero's mind was everywhere else but not on the court, the only thing we could see from his side was hitting the ball out of the court for which he received a warning. The result was 6/2, 6/3 but it could be as well 6/1 6/1 if Rosol stayed focused all the time. Some people say he could win the whole tournament and it's true, but his part of the draw is quite tough.

The worst match to watch was the one between Ivo Minar and Juan-Pablo Brzezicki. Brzezicki was injured in the back and couldn't serve at all, sometimes he was even serving underarm. Minar looked a bit confused at first, but he soon took the first set 6/1 and everyone was expecting Brzezicki to retire, but as he was scheduled to play doubles with Marrero later on, he didn't want to retire. He was quite frustrated because of his injury and kicked the fence three times, then started to dig in the ground with his bottle. In the second set Minar quickly took the lead and everyone was just praying it would be over soon, because looking at Brzezicki, everyone suffered maybe more than him. The final score was 6/1, 6/1. The supervisor then talked to Brzezicki and maybe was trying to persuade him not to play the doubles, but Brzezicki insisted that he would play.

Attila Balazs defeated Jan Hernych 6/2, 6/2, so he didn't have to be so upset about his doubles loss when he and David Savic lost to the pair Fischer, Oswald. This seems to be a good doubles team. The score was 6/1, 6/4.

You don't want to see the way Martin Prikryl drinks cola, trust me, you don't! If I wasn't almost finished with my lunch at the time I saw it, I think I would return most of it and stay hungry instead. I also found out I have Prikryl's phone number in my phone and don't know from when and why, because I have no intention to call him at all...

The Polish pair Bednarek, Kowalczyk defeated the Czechs Mertl, Hernych 7/6, 1/6, 10/5 so we say goodbye to both Czechs. I think we expected a bit more from Hernych, but Balazs is a quiet guy with a dangerous game.

The Czech-Australian pair Sadik Kadir and Lukas Rosol took on the Slovak-German pair Igor Zelenay and Philipp Marx (yes, everyone is usually referring to Marx as Karl and not Philipp). With the support of Kadir's countryman John Millman who spent the set hiding in his towel and asking for translations of Zelenay's swear words, they took the first set 6/3. After Millman left the stands, Zelenay and Marx took the lead 4/1, so the return of the fan king was required. Millman took on his jacket in a very strange way and suddenly all the games went to Kadir and Rosol who took the second set and the match 6/4. Zelenay looked very frustrated and shouted things like "Fuck it already!", "What have I done to anyone that I play like this!" and "It's a punishment to play today!". Millman was also interested in Marx's shouts, but unfortunately I don't understand German well enough so I couldn't help there.

Marrero and Brzezicki put up a fight against Prikryl and Krajinovic, but eventually lost 4/6, 6/1, 5/10. That's only good for Brzezicki who really needs some rest... and for Marrero who maybe needs a psychologist.

The dangerous Gonzalo and his cigarettes weren't present in the stands today so no firefighters today. But as we have two Spaniards on center court tomorrow, I have to hide the gasoline...
