Dlouhy / Waske vs Huey / Inglot
The second doubles semi final was the start of day 6 in Talheim. Dlouhy, a former Grand Slam champion with his veteran partner Waske were facing Huey / Inglot, the latter with position number 546 in doubles ranking. Surprisingly Dlouhy started the match with a lot of problems concerning his service and volley shots and therefore got broken in the fourth game. From game to game he was improving and the Czech-German combination was able to break back directly. So it was the tie-break in the first set, which had to decide favoring Huey/Inglot in the important situations.
Although, in particular Waske was pushing himself and his partner, the German got broken in the seventh game of the second set and due to solid services from Inglot the Philippine/British pair could confirm and eventually take the match to reach the final of the Heilbronn Open 2012.
Björn Phau vs Dominik Meffert
The qualifier Meffert began the first singles semifinal more aggressively and was especially attacking the second serve from Phau, so that one break in the fourth game was enough to take the first set with 6-4. With the beginning of the second set Phau improved his game, was quicker on his feet, had more length in his baseline shots and made an early break in fourth game. He also found the adequate answer to the attacks from the taller German, as he could set more than once successful lobs. He eventually took the second set by 6-3 after 1 hour and 12 minutes.
At the beginning of the final set, both players had problems to hold their service games and were facing many break points. However, both were able to hold so that the tie break had to decide. Here it was Phau, who could clinch two early mini breaks to reach an early 4-0 lead. Meffert wasn’t able to fight back and lost the match after 2 hours and 27 minutes 6-4, 3-6, 6-7.
Ruben Bemelmans (photo) vs Cedric – Marcel Stebe
The final match of the day was the eagerly awaited encounter between the Belgian qualifier and the second seed German. Unfortunately the match could not match the expectations, as – in particular – the young German was not able to find into his game. From the beginning on he was under pressure at his service games and had to save many break points. Eventually in game five, the Belgian could convert one of his break point opportunities, but wasn’t in the position to serve out at 5-4. So he needed another break to finally take the first set with 7-5, which was well-deserved, as Bemelmans hit more winners and had a first service quote of 80 %.
The second set started like the first with Stebe facing break points at his own service game. This time the Belgian was faster and converted his first chance. The German, who was loudly supported by Alex Waske amongst others sitting in his box, found the right answer and broke immediately back. Though Stebe’s game was still too inconsistent and in the seventh game the Belgian was able to decide the match. Stebe was 40-0 up in this service game, but two horrible unforced errors with his forehand and two double faults sealed the German’s fate. In the following game Bemelmans held his serve and finally converted his second match point when Stebe had problems with his service game once again. 1 hour and 36 minutes after the start of the match, Bemelmans reached the final in Talheim to face Björn Phau.
